One word.... EVE!

Yes that's right, I have switched MMO's yet again! This one is big.... this one is REALLY BIG. Of all the MMOs I have played EvE will take this blog in a completely different and new direction. Well, what I meen by "completely new and different direction" I am talking about the essence of EVE. It's just such a different kind of MMO compared to Lineage 2, EverQuest 2, or Vanguard.

See in a traditional fantasy MMO you have these rails to go on. You might adventure here or there or go quest at this spot or that spot but you are limited to a steady regular progression of your character that is the same as everyone else. A better way to describe this is, "In [insert generic fantasy MMO here] your character gets strong as you level up, but the monsters get stronger aswell, so really the only thing that changes around you is the enviroment. And you just go through the same enviroment and quests that everyone else does."

In EVE its completely different. There are no quests. No places to go and farm, no castles to explore no dungeons to raid. Rather the game is the players. Every journey and every characters experience in EVE is completely unique because there are no "rails" to go on in order to get to the top or to get to some max level to do good in PvP. In EVE everything just IS. It's hard to explain.... I hope you get the point I am trying to make. ;)

Ok the first screenshot I would like to show you is this nice little picture of my mining ship the Navitas.
Beautiful isn't it? Here you can see me mining an asteroid. Behind me floats a jetcan which I place my ore into. Later I will come back with my hauler to haul the ore back to a nearby station.
I quickly made some friends in EVE. ^^ Here I am in the middle of a big mining operation! Here is a picture of a minmatar shuttle. Shuttles are a fast and cheap way to get around the universe.
The universe in EVE is huge! As many as 35,000 people can play at one single time on the same server. That is one of the craziest and best things about EVE the fact that there is just one server. This is so exciting! I can't wait to see what will happen in my stay here in EVE. ^^

This sort of echoes my excitement when I started playing EVE. However, I am going to burst your bubble. It sounds a lot better than it actually is.

1. It will take you forever to catch up. No matter how well you play or how hardcore you are, your skills train at a static rate. I am still miffed that CCP doesn't offer new players a "catch up" program of sorts as nothing sucks worse in EVE than realizing you are 5 million skill points behind.

2. EVE is boring. There are plenty of exciting stories about EVE, but that is only because the author had so little to do in EVE that they had the time to write a good story. EVE is a true lesson in patience as you will spend a lot of time waiting for something to happen.

3. EVE's UI fucking sucks. I don't normally cuss, but that is how bad it is.

With my negativity aside, here are a few good tips.

1. Start here: http://hgamer.blogspot.com/2006/01/now-playing-eve-online.html

Click on the player creation guide or you will completely gimp your first character.

2. Get in a corporation ASAP. You can not play EVE solo until AFTER you've spent a long time playing in groups and amassing wealth.

3. Play to have fun. Do not get invested in the political bullshit or you will be seriously disapointed.

1. I know this, and don't care. Other people have told me this and I refuse to believe it. I will NOT be one of those people who just sits in hanger and skills up all day.

2. I know this too, I am a very experienced MMO player and I saw this right away. The game is on one hand very complex and on the other very simple depending on how you look at it.

3. I think I just need a bigger screen XD

Something wrong with your link?

I kind of doubt you can gimp your first character, all those attributes come in handy at some point (with possible exception of charisma) and can always get implants to offset any lacking attributes.

Anyways thanks for the advice... I guess... I would prefer if you be a bit more optimistic. I know you mean well but your comment sounded a bit too pessimistic for my tastes.

:P Thanks proffesser.

Believe me... I know what I am getting into, this game is like 90% boredom 5% sheer terror! I love it. ^^ I have had enough rails, I can play Oblivion if I wanna slay some monsters.

First off, I just found your blog and I think the title is hilariously awesome and the content is equally great. I love it.

Secondly, I played EVE for some time while on a break from WoW. I think it's a stunning game, but my biggest gripe with it is that it's incredibly hard to catch up to other players if you didn't start on day one. This sunk EVE for me, and I'll imagine it might do the same for you in a few months.

Anyway, definitely going to keep reading your blog--feel free to check out mine if you want~

@Max, I have moved all my posts over to gaxonline.com and have started to mess around with the blog there. I am considering switching but I have not made my decision yet. It seems the tools on gaxonline.com are better then the blogger tools, but is gaxonline.com here to stay? Will it be reliable? Also, the link to my blog on gaxonline.com is HUGE while the link to blogspot is really easy to type and understand. I'm just not sure...

@Dana, thanks so much for your comment! I don't think I have ever been so happy in my life. T.T

I'm disappointed, you caught onto my intention. I fully meant to be negative.

Why? Because EVE is a game run by a company that takes itself far too seriously. And its a game that allows a single player to destroy the enjoyment of thousands by any means possible. There is no lines between good or bad. CCP has the "hands off" approach. Some players may like that, but it sets up nothing but heartbreak for honest players.

A couple things to note.

If you didn't follow a starting guide, you are gimped. You are months behind in training. Your initial stats are not optimized and therefore will invariably increase your training time to a rate which is completely unacceptable. This isn't about min/maxing your character, this is about getting a character that is PLAYABLE in later stages.

I played two months with a character I created. I had to reroll, and when I did, my fresh character was almost a full month ahead in training than the character I actually played.

Like I said, play to have fun and that is exactly where you seem to be headed. Just don't be surprised when that fun runs out.

Hey man, nice blog!
EVE's a very interesting and fun game. It has a big learning curve, but I got the hang of it. I guess that's why some people are turned off.
As you progress, things become more and more epic!

Anyways, I was wondering if you want to do a link exchange. My website is http://evewarrior.com

Email me if you want! tonglil@hotmail.com

Have fun with your blog!
